The Arts Council of Greater Weston has five fantastic films selected for its fifth annual Weston Foreign Film Series. Each year the Arts Council works with the Fort Lauderdale Foreign Film Festival to select the feature films. Weston 8 Cinema plays host to the Weston Foreign Film Series.  This year’s selections include dramas, comedies and romance. Season tickets go on sale on November 8th. Due to the Series’ popularity in the past, there will be two showings of each movie this season.

All foreign language films have English subtitles.

Guests attending the early showings of Empire of Silver and Kodosh are invited to attend a movie discussion with Hal Axler, executive director of the prestigious Fort Lauderdale Foreign Film Festival/Paradiso Cinema. He will conduct a short Question and Answer session following each of these two movies.

Empire of Silver  Monday, November 8, 2010

The 2010-2011 season starts on November 8th with Empire of Silver. This film was produced in China and is the true recounting of a great financial dynasty struggling to adapt from the old feudal methods to the new industrial and cultural revolutions. The father, owner and totalitarian head of the family business, challenges the prodigal son who wants to modernize the company and move it into the future. The movie is beautifully filmed, with great attention to mores, customs and styles. The clothing is true to the period and gives viewers a real glimpse of what life was like in China and how far it has come today.

   A Deal is a Deal  Monday, December 13, 2010

A Deal is a Deal will be shown on December 13th. This is a British comedy about a blue collar worker who drives a train and has had the misfortune of having two people killed on the tracks. He finds out that if a third suicide or accident happens, he will be retired from the job with a very large pension. Will some poor soul pave the way to a future of moneyed leisure for the motorman? Can he make it happen? Does he have to wait for fate to take its toll?

   Kadosh  Monday, January 10, 2011

The Israeli film Kodosh will be featured on January 10th. This movie tells the story of a happily married young couple who cannot produce children. The drama ensues when the wife’s ultra-orthodox Head Rabbi father seeks to have the husband ask for a divorce and then marry the wife’s younger sister. It’s a clash of love versus religious fervor.
